walkthrough + postmortem
Walkthrough:
- Grab the bucket near the lake. Go through the blue door and interact with the well to get the moon statuette. Go back through the red door.
- Switch to Rei by hitting the escape button and clicking the character swap button. Then proceed to grab the branch sticking out of the bloody log to the left of the murder shed.
- Interact with the boxes in front of the murder shed with Rei to get the star statuette.
- Interact with the door of the murder shed to clear off the ivy and enter it. Grab the hammer on the left and head out of the murder shed to the main house. Interact with the door twice to clear off the note and remove the planks.
- Now that you have both one branch and planks, head through the blue door and interact with the cat NPC for a large board.
- Head over to the top right to the stargazer's house and enter through the front door. With the moon and star statuettes in your inventory, interact with the box on the bookshelf to the left to get a pair of shears.
- Go through the red door and use the board at the top left lake, at the bottom center point to acquire a plushie.
- Go back through the blue door and check your inventory. After checking your inventory, interact with the blue fire next to the cat NPC's booth to light up the fruit of the tree above you.
- Walk over the bridge and up to the left to interact twice with the tree near the note in order to clear the note and use the shears for a soul fruit.
- Go back through the red door and swap to Kaisei through the inventory menu (you can open this by hitting the escape button). Interact with the hole so that the door to the main house disappears.
- Interact with the doorway to the main house to start the ending cutscene.
Postmortem:
so I probably said I was going to take a break after last month's game... but then I had this great idea to make a horror game that wasn't a visual novel during October for prime spooky season.
I thought it'd be less work because I planned only two maps, two rooms, and only one ending, but...
it is the 30th as I write this.
Anyway, I basically made this for myself because Kaisei and Rei are my two most favorite OCs and I forgot to design Halloween outfits for them last year so instead we have this... and partially because thinking about whether a lot of people will play my games is pointless so I might as well meet my own standards. The only real reason I didn't go and buy RPG Maker MV when it was on sale to make this instead of coding it myself is because not having the newest version of paid software bothers me on an instinctual level.
Because I made this mainly for myself, there's some things that you might notice are missing or lacking, namely:
- why is that one branch on the map blurry?
- why do the character sprite walk cycles suck?
- why did you h-flip asymmetrical sprites?
- why don't the character sprites have a walk up and walk down animation?
- why does the sound design suck?
- why is the game so short?
- where is all the context for these two characters???
I thought about these problems... but the predicted gain would be too low to justify the cost, so yeah. I doubt the average player will care too much about the extra details I already worked super hard on so it wouldn't be worth it.
Anyway, here's some scrapped assets:
That first one is a scrapped inventory theme for Kaisei. Maybe I'll repurpose it or something for another game about him.
The GIF shows the main reason why we have a super simplified walk cycle instead. so that's pretty cool. I spent like a day on that. was not worth it.
To finish this off, here's a fun thing that I wonder if people will discover on their own... check your inventory before you throw the plushie in the fire. What you see may surprise you.
Get You're Invited...
You're Invited...
You've been invited to break into a haunted house.
